After much research and development Backup.com.au is now implementing a new Online Backup Manager (OBM).

The new OBM can handle much larger numbers of files (the old OBM peaked at a file list of 150,000), with one of our clients now backing-up 1.5 million files. It can also backup open files and databases, a feature that cost extra on our previous OBM is now included as standard. You can now backup SQL databases, Outlook.pst files and MYOB without having to shutdown the applications first (although we do still recommend that you shutdown your applications at the end of each day).

The new OBM also allows for extra recovery options. You can retreive you data online from anywhere in the world.

There has been a trade off for these extra features though. The user interface is not as pretty as the previous version. This is because the new OBM is a complete rebuild from the ground up, and while it is a full production version, our engineers have not finished making it look pretty yet.

There has been a reducing in the encryption algorithm used too. Previously we employed a Blowfish 448bit encryption but we have scaled that back to an AES Triple DES encryption. It help to reduce the load on your computer while the backup is running but still provides government/banking levels of security.
